Lead Us Safely Home

by Jonathon Smith

1.
Come, everyone who thirsts Come now, to the water And he who has no money Come now, come buy and eat Incline your ear and come to me Hear, that your soul may live Seek the Lord while he may be found Call on him, while he's near And let the wicked one forsake his way The unrighteous man, his thoughts Incline your ear and come to me Hear, that your soul may live Listen diligently to me, eat what is good Delight yourselves in rich food Come, buy wine and milk Without money, without price Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread? And you labor for what does not satisfy
2.
Sing praises to the Lord: the Wise, the Good, the Grand Who formed us by his word, who leads us with his hand Sing praises to our God, who made the world to be Who spread the skies abroad and filled the sounding sea The Lord will prove a faithful Friend His might and love will never end Sing praise to Him whose eye beheld us near the grave And sent His Son from high to succor and to save Sing creatures all below, sing angels in the height Ye all your tributes owe, let all in praise unite
3.
On God I've called in trouble's hour, And never have I called in vain Again afflictions 'round me lower Lord, hear and help again A stranger's lot, a pilgrim's fare Is all I meet below In every sweet I find a snare In every smile, a foe Woe is me, that I must roam So long in this land of tears When shall my spirit reach her home Above all foes and fears? There is a peace that none can break, A joy that ne'er shall flee When shall I lay me down to wake To these, oh Lord, and thee?
4.
Rebuke us, Father, but in love Let all Thy chastening mercies prove With every stroke, Thy grace impart And let them move, not break, the heart Thy hand is heavy, but our sin is heavier still our souls within It whelms, it sinks us to the grave Arise, Redeemer, help and save Our hearts are open, Lord, to Thee Our inmost wish, Thine eye can see Thou know'st our dangers, foes and snares And will not scorn our humble prayers In Thee we hope, on Thee we rest Oh, give us what Thou seest best Our guide through every trial past Oh, lead us safely home at last
5.
The Lord is King, let the earth be glad He comes in heavenly glory clad To fix in human hearts his throne And make the mighty world his own Darkness and clouds around him move Himself is everlasting love Ye heathen at his footstool fall Ye gods adore the God of all Rejoice ye saints; the King of kings Appears with healing in his wings Rejoice, your Savior God to view He brings but hope and peace to you O follow good and evil flee His presence then your joy shall be Light for his people here is sown The full fruit reaped in heaven alone

Reprise 02:15
7.
Let the sunshine quit my sky Let the sharp east wind assail Let the fightings from without And the fears within prevail. Only, only, only call me thine, Only, only let me call thee mine, And all shall be well. All shall be well. Let dark disappointment come Let affection’s cherished dreams Vanish like the bloom of spring Like the rainbow’s passing gleams. Let the broken bonds of love Leave a void within my breast; Let the farewells of each day Remind me this is not my rest.
8.
Until I See 07:06
Sometimes I wonder if you ever tire from my tired line: "Declare me innocent from my hidden faults." More often than I care to admit I don't perceive my own brokenness Until I see the mess I've made Until I see I need your hand Sometimes I wonder if I will ever learn Your grace depends so little on me And that you still speak Help me see your commands give light, Radiant light to my eyes Help me believe your decrees are firm All of them are righteous
9.
Grave on my spirit, Son of God, the lessons of Thy light, Once spoken on this earth of ours, to us the Sons of night Repeat those glimpses of the light, repeat them hour by hour Pour in the gladness they impart with richer, fuller power Repeat the whispers of Thy love, the still small voice of peace Speak to my soul 'till every part takes in the blessedness Recall the messages of love for latest ages given, Once uttered underneath these skies and sent down from heaven “Lo, I am with you evermore, tho' parted from your sight, Abide in me, and I in you, so shall thou walk in light.” Show me the upper room where Thou gave the first bread and wine recall the wonders of that feast, the words of truth divine. The love that passeth knowledge, shed abroad within my soul. The love that soothes the troubled heart and makes the broken whole. “Lo, I am with you evermore, tho' parted from your sight, Abide in me, and I in you, so shall thou walk in light.” Unfold the vastness of that love, let all its fullness shine Into the innermost recess of this poor heart of mine.

about

A couple years ago, Wes Crawford distributed texts by Horatius Bonar and Henry Francis Lyte to musicians at Redeemer Fellowship. Wes asked us to write songs for corporate worship. At that time, I wrote “Who Shall Separate Us?” I kept writing songs, although not necessarily intended for congregational singing. I figured most of them may never be sung at church, so I decided to record the songs myself.

I started recording these songs in the basement of our house in Raytown. Since I have a couple friends who play trombone and banjo really well, I asked them to lay down a few tracks. My family moved to a house in Kansas City a year later, and I finished tracking the album. I mixed the songs with my son running around the house. At some points in the recording, I hope you can hear that it was recorded at home; at other points, I hope it isn't quite as apparent.

Because I can be quite forgetful, I wrote these songs to remind me of God's goodness. I hope they can edify you, as well. Feel free to play along, as the download of the album comes with chord charts for all the songs.

Enjoy.
